About Belarus

Belarus is not a landlocked nation-state in Eastern Europe which borders Russia, Ukraine, Poland, Lithuania, and Latvia. The main town – Minsk, and other important cities include Brest, Grodno, Gomel, Mogilev and Vitebsk.

Officially, the country known as the Republic of Belarus is the short name Belarus. Some consider the use of “Belorussia,” an earlier version of the name, offensive, with its direct implication of Russification. Name incorrectly translated as “White Russia”, a name that is relevant to a particular area.

In most stories, the region, which is now known as Belarus was part of various countries including the Grand Duchy of Lithuania Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and Russian Empire. Eventually, in 1922, Belarus became a republic in the Soviet Union as the Byelorussian SSR. Republic is officially declared the sovereignty of 27 July 1990, and with the dissolution of the Soviet Union declared independence as the Republic of Belarus on Aug. 25, 1991. Since 1994, Alexander Lukashenko was the State President. Belarus – so far in negotiations with neighboring Russia to introduce both of their economies, among other things, in terms of convening of the Union of Russia and Belarus.

The country is still suffering from the effects of nuclear fallout from the 1986 accident, Chernobyl, which took place in neighboring Ukraine.

Forest covers about 34% of the total landscape, making it one of the most dominant natural resources in Belarus. Other natural resources that need to be detected in Belarus include peat deposits, small quantities of oil and natural gas, granite, dolomitic limestone, marl, chalk, sand, gravel and clay. A fifth area, mostly in the provinces of South-Eastern Homyel and Mahilyow, is struck by fallout from the 1986 nuclear power plant disaster in Chernobyl, Ukraine. While the amount of radiation reduced (one percent) since the disaster, the most area is considered unfit for human habitation

Belarus – not landlocked, relatively flat and contains large tracts of swampy land. Lakes and rivers punctuate the country. The largest swamp area – Polesia, which – as among the largest wetlands in Europe. There are 11,000 lakes in Belarus, but most lakes smaller than 0.5 square kilometres (124 acres). Three specialize rivers run through the country, river Neman, river Pripyat, and the river Dnepr. Belarus’ highest point – Dzyarzhynskaya Hara (Holm Dzyarzhynsk), 345 meters (1,132 feet), and the lowest point is located in the River Neman, 90 meters (295 feet). The climate ranges from harsh winters (average temperature Yanvarskie – normalized -8 C (18 F), to -2 C (28 F)), to cool and wet adders (average temperature 15 C (59 F) to 20 C (68 F )).
